I was born and raised in a town called Port Talbot, in South Wales. The town is famous for its steel industry, also Hollywood actors Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen. I began lifting weights from a young age inspired by my grandfather who was a weightlifter and fitness fanatic.
I was fortunate enough to be coached from a young age by local lifting legend Mike Brown. Mike competed in the Commonwealth games in Weightlifting and was a competitor in Britain’s Strongest Man 1983. I learned from a young age the different ways to train to develop strength. Percentages, the Westside method, the Bulgarian method and periodisation, the latter I still use today. Mike taught me how to use progressive overload with compound movements, using the correct amount of weight increases and to pay attention to the nervous system and recovery. Also Mike ingrained in me the training values that make a complete strongman. It’s important to look good, be functional fit and strong always. Not just before a contest but a way of life. I began serious competition in 1999 as a teen and I still compete today as an open class lifter, now coached by Olympian and the greatest British female Weightlifter of all time, Natasha Purdue.

Who Inspires You?
My grandfather inspires me, he’s 89. He still gives me lifting and life advice. I’m also a big fan of the Russian weightlifter and silver medalist in the Beijing Olympics, Dmitry Klokov. He has great charisma, physique and physical powers unmatched that motivates thousands of lifters across the world.
What Motivates You?
I’m motivated by the current deadlift records. The deadlift is the true test of strength. I have a burning desire to showcase my method of training, by breaking the raw lifting records in my weight division.
Favourite Tune to Train To?
Juke Box Hero by Foreigner. It reminds me of celebrating my last great victory in Las Vegas, after deadlifting 317.5kg at 82.5kg.
